فقد كانت أيام كآبتي طويلة ضمن جدرانها، وأطول منها كانت ليالي وحدتي وانفرادي، ومن ذا يستطيع أن ينفصل عن كآبته ووحدته من غير أن يتألم في قلبه؟

“Long were the days of my anguish between these walls, and longer still the nights I kept company with silence. For who among us can tear themselves from their sorrow and solitude without the heart crying out in protest?”

إننا نرى قوة المادة وعجزها .. إن قوى الاقتصاد لا تستطيع أن تصنع لنا الإنسان الشريف النبيل مهما تحالفت بدولاراتها.

فإن الغموض والسديم هما بداءة كل شيء لا نهايته، وإنني بملء الرغبة أود أن تتذكروني كبداءة.

كنتُ أكتبُ عنكِ كي أُفرِّغَ نفسي منكِ، كتبتُ ... كتبتُ ... كتبتُ، ولكني اكتشفتُ في النهاية أني كلَّما كتبتُ عنكِ ازددتُ بكِ امتلاءً.

أمتطي حزني الأعمى لوحدي في الليلة المظلمة، فيرعبني صهيل الفقد، أمضي إلى حتفي دون رسن، فيسحق الحزن أحلامي الصغيرة تحت حوافره.

لطالما كنت ربيعي وكذبة عمري التي صدّقتها وأحببت العيش فيها.. لطالما كان الكذب بنظري شديد السواد، لكنك كنت تزهي كذبك بألوان لم أعرفها مع سواك.

حتى وإن كانت الطريق صعبة ومجهولة المصير، لا تيأس، فليس ثمة سفر لا ينتهي

وَما العَيشُ إِلّا غَفلَةٌ بَعدَ غَفلَةٍ يَمُرُّ بِها الإِنسانُ حَتّى يُغيَّبا

“Life is nothing but one heedlessness after another, through which a person passes until he is buried.”

فَيا مَوتُ زُر إِنَّ الحَياةَ ذَميمةٌ وَإِنّي عَلى أُنسٍ بِكَ لَحَبيب

“O death, come visit, for life is contemptible — and truly I am fond of your company.”

ضَحِكنا وَكانَ الضَّحكُ مِنّا سَفاهةً وَداعي البُكاءِ الدَّهرُ وَالعُمرُ مُنهَلّ

“We laughed, and laughter was our folly; weeping is more fitting — for time erodes all and life spills away.”

تَعَبٌ كُلُّها الحَياةُ فَما أَعجَبُ إِلّا مِن راغِبٍ في ازدِياد

“All of life is weariness — I marvel only at one who desires more of it.”

الشَّكُّ أَلَمٌ في غايَةِ الوَحدَةِ لا يَعرِفُ أَنَّ اليَقينَ هُوَ تَوأَمُه

“Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother.”

وَفي الجَهلِ قَبلَ المَوتِ مَوتٌ لِأَهلِهِ وَأَجسادُهُم قَبلَ القُبورِ قُبور

“In ignorance before death there is a death for its people — their bodies are graves before the graves.”

نِم نَومَةً لا تَقومُ مِنها فَعُمرُ الإِنسانِ نَومٌ وَيَقظَة

“Sleep a sleep you do not wake from — for a man's life is sleep and waking.”

في صمتِ الليلِ تسمعُ الروحُ ما لا تسمعه الأذن في صخب النهار

“In the silence of the night the soul hears what the ear cannot hear in the noise of the day.”

مَن لم يذق مرارةَ الفراق لم يعرف حلاوةَ اللقاء

“He who has not tasted the bitterness of separation does not know the sweetness of reunion.”

الحُزنُ ما هُوَ إِلّا جِدارٌ بَينَ حَديقَتَين

“Sorrow is nothing but a wall between two gardens.”

الذِّكرى شَكلٌ مِن أَشكالِ اللِّقاء

“Remembrance is a form of meeting.”

لا يُدرِكُ أَسرارَ قُلوبِنا إِلّا مَن لَدَيهِ أَسرارٌ في قَلبِه

وَما الدُّنيا سِوى حُلمٍ طَويلٍ وَسَكرٍ لَم يُفِق مِنهُ نَبيه

“The world is nothing but a long dream and an intoxication from which even its prophet has not sobered.”

يَدُ الأَيّامِ تَمحو كُلَّ شَيءٍ وَلا يَبقى سِوى ذِكرُ الجَميل

وَقفنا عَلى دارِ مَن قَد مَضى فَلَم يَفتَح البابَ حَيٌّ وَلا مَيِّت

أَنا في قَيدِ الحَياةِ وَلَستُ أَدري لِماذا جِئتُ وَلا أَيَن المَصير

“I am bound by life, yet I know not why I came nor where the end lies.”

إِنَّ الشَّبابَ كَأَنَّهُ طَيفُ مَنامٍ يُعانِقُ الإِنسانَ ثُمَّ يَنساه

إِذا مُتنا وَدُفِّنّا في التُّراب تَبحَثُ عَنّا أَيدٍ وَلا تَجِد

“When we die and are buried in the earth, hands shall search for us and find nothing.”

قُل لِمَن يَسأَلُ عَنّي بَعدَ مَوتي: كانَ يَعشَقُ وَيَشعُرُ وَيُفكِّر

كُلُّنا في مَسرَحِ الوُجودِ نُمَثِّل ثُمَّ نَغيب

“We are all players on the stage of existence — then we vanish.”

كَم مِن لَيلٍ طَويلٍ تَساءَلتُ فيهِ عَن سِرِّ الوُجودِ فَلَم أَجِد جَواباً

“How many a long night have I asked about the secret of existence and found no answer.”

من لم يتعلم في صغره لم يتقدم في كبره

“He who does not learn in his youth does not advance in his old age.”

وَإِنَّ المَوتَ أَعدَلُ مِن حُكّامٍ عَلى وَجهِ البَسيطَةِ لَو عَدَلنا

“Death is more just than any ruler on the face of the earth, if we were to be fair.”

نَحنُ لا نَنسى مَن أَحبَبناهُم، نَحنُ نَتَعَلَّمُ فَقَط كَيفَ نَحيا بِدونِهِم

“We do not forget those we loved — we only learn how to live without them.”

الغِيابُ يُكَبِّرُ الأَشياءَ وَيَجعَلُها أَعظَمَ مِمّا هيَ في الحَقيقَة

في الحُبِّ كَما في الحَرب، اللَّحظَةُ الفارِقَةُ هيَ التي تَكونُ فيها أَعزَلَ تَماماً
