حكمةٌ في اغتنام الوقت: إن لم تقطعه قطعك. تُنسب غالباً إلى الإمام الشافعي (وقد أوردها بهذا المعنى ابن القيّم)، والنسبة محلُّ خلاف، وليست حديثاً نبويّاً؛ ولفظُ الشافعيّ المرويّ: «الوقتُ سيفٌ، فإن قطعتَه وإلّا قطعك». وذكر بعضهم أنّ «السِّيف» قد يُراد به الماء الجاري لا سيف القتال.
A maxim on seizing time: if you do not cut through it, it cuts you. It is commonly attributed to Imam al-Shāfiʿī (cited in this sense by Ibn al-Qayyim), though the ascription is debated and it is not a prophetic hadith; al-Shāfiʿī’s reported wording is “Time is a sword — cut it, or it cuts you.” Some early sources read al-sīf as a flowing current rather than a battle-sword.
