“If speech is silver, then silence is gold”

A maxim weighing speech against silence: if a fitting word is silver, well-judged silence is gold. It is attested early in Arabic letters (associated with al-Jāḥiẓ, 9th c.) and recurs across cultures — a Talmudic Aramaic parallel exists, and the German/European form “Reden ist Silber, Schweigen ist Gold” was popularized in English by Thomas Carlyle (1831).

حكمةٌ توازن بين قيمة الكلام والصمت: فإن كانت الكلمةُ المناسبة فضّةً، فالسكوت في موضعه ذهب. وقد عُرفت في الأدب العربي قديماً (تُنسب إلى الجاحظ)، ولها نظائر عند أممٍ شتّى — منها مثلٌ تلموديٌّ آراميّ، والصيغة الأوروبية التي أشاعها كارلايل سنة 1831.
